Perry was born July 25, 1968 in Chicago, Illinois to Laurie Metcalf Perry and Jeff Perry. Her first television performances were Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother played the character. Fearing stress, her parents were not keen to let her pursue acting before she reached the age of 18. Perry admitted that she wasn't comfortable acting in high school, but started acting to make friends during her time at Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry, after graduating from Boston University, moved into New York in search of TV roles. Perry was able to land small roles on TV shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, homesickness brought her back to California to find theater work. Perry's mother and I appeared on Broadway with her as part of The Other Place, in 2013. In 2015, she was a part of her father as well as Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning play Anna Christie on the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry was in nine episodes of The Family, an ABC drama The Family in 2016. In 2017, Perry starred in a role on ABC's political thriller Scandal along with her father. In the same year, she played a young version of Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory) in which she played her mother as a young version. She was cast in the role by auditioning for an open role despite being a fan of the role.
